About Organization
The Association of Black Psychologists was founded in San Francisco in 1968 by a number of Black Psychologists from across the country. They united to actively address the serious problems facing Black Psychologists and the larger Black community. Guided by the principle of self-determination, these psychologists set about building an institution through which they could address the long-neglected needs of Black professionals. Their goal was to have a positive impact upon the mental health of the national Black community by means of planning, programs, services, training, and advocacy. Their objectives were:
organize their skills and abilities to influence necessary change, and
To address themselves to significant social problems affecting the Black community and other segments of the population whose needs society has not fulfilled.
The Association of Black Psychologists has grown from a handful of concerned professionals into an independent, autonomous organization of over 1400 members.
ORGANIZATIONAL REGIONS
ABPSI Is divided into 4 regions: Eastern, Western, Southern, and Midwest.
Indiana Association of Black Psychologists (IABPSI)
IABPSI is a 30 year old organization which was founded by 15 Black psychologists in the state of Indiana. We are committed to supporting Black graduate students and undergraduate students interested in entering psychology as a profession.
We host a yearly student reception in September/October. The main purposes of the receptions are to acquaint students in Black Psychology, help those interested in pursuing degrees in psychology with tips on applying and succeeding in programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and, as a future goal of the organization, provide students with a chance to practice their presentation skills by giving them constructive feedback in a supportive and low stress environment.
Mentorship: we actively try to pair students to professionals who have similar research or professional interests.
We provide professional seminars during Black Mental Health Month, participate in Indiana Black Expo Minority Health Expo and when opportunities arise, we promote mental health and wellness to non-profit organizations.
